Coffee lids that smell like coffee (or don’t smell at all)!

The disposable coffee cup is a staple for most coffee drinkers who take it to go. The barrister grabs the cup, fills it up with your favourite coffee, snaps on the plastic lid and you’re off. You may or may not have noticed one flaw with this design though… the coffee just doesn’t smell like coffee when the lid is on. Aroma is one of the things that coffee is judged on and with the heat from the coffee warming up lid a “plasticy” smell is released. This invariably changes your perception of the taste.

Various companies have taken on the challenge of redesigning the cup cap, such as Hong Kong based Mint Urban Tech which tried flavour-injected plastics, or Seattle-based Vaporpath, who is marketing the odorless Viora cup lid. Vaporpath took to redesign the lid while at it, constructing the lid in a way that allows the coffee scent itself to easily waft up your nostrils. This basically means that when you sip your coffee, you get the smell of coffee as well which is supposed to enhance the coffee drinking experience.
